Why learn to play the guitar?
From experience, playing the guitar is the most fulfilling hobby. You don’t need a lot of time. This is a good hobby if you can spare 15 minutes a day. You can play it by yourself. You can play it to your children. You can ‘jam’ with your friends. You can play it to impress your girlfriend *coughs*.
Trust me. You will never get bored of playing the guitar. It is the perfect creative outlet for your mind to express itself. Being able to play your favourite songs on the guitar is an incredible feeling! You will enjoy your favourite songs on a whole new level. You can easily play it anywhere you want (as opposed to a piano or drums). And I don’t want to sound like an 8-year-old but, playing guitar is a cool thing!
You may also realize that this is your calling. This may be what you are born to do. Your dream to being a Rockstar starts now!
Or you would like your children to pick it up. It works the same way for them too. It will develop their creativity. They may even perform in a school assembly. That would be a massive confidence booster! They can also make new friends who play the guitar. Guitar lessons for children is becoming a trend. In some schools, not only is it an extra curriculum activity, but could also be part of the school syllabus. In some universities, students are required to take an art course regardless of their major. Imagine the advantage a child would have if he/she had taken guitar lessons prior to entering a university.
From the enquiries that I have received, most people feel that playing the guitar is tough. They are afraid to be discouraged after a few lessons. My reply is always, “It is not tough at all!”. Anyone can do it!
As long as you have interest, love for music and a positive attitude, you are set to go. A positive attitude is very important. Just like learning any skills, learning to play the guitar requires persistence and perseverance.
The first 3 months or so will NOT be a piece of cake. Your wrists will go through unfamiliar motions. Your fingers will be stretched beyond that of a normal human being. All these will add up to your guitar making sounds that would chase all the cats out of your neighbourhood. Ok I’m being a bit dramatic but you get my point. With a positive attitude you will not give up and push though this roadblock.
Trust me, it is rewarding. It will be fun.
